What I'm Listening To This Week: K-Pop at Lolla
Lollapalooza released their 2023 lineup this year, including a bunch of K-Pop artists. So of course, to prepare myself, I've been listening to the artists that will make their way to Chicago this summer. This week I will be giving my thoughts on some of the artists coming to Lolla.
Tomorrow X Together
This is the first time a K-Pop group (emphasis on group) is headlining Lollapalooza, and honestly, I'm surprised at this pick. For starters, TXT was at Lolla last year, most of the time they don't repeat artists so I was a little disappointed that it wasn't someone new. However, I am excited that they're going to be given a bigger stage because it was definitely needed last year. I was also surprised that they were headlining because, in my opinion, they're not necessarily headline material, even in the K-Pop world. They have gained popularity in the U.S. with a lot of recent collaborations, so I could see that side of things but as a carat (Seventeen fan) I am sad they didn't get Seventeen.
NewJeans
When I saw their name I GASPED out loud. NewJeans is a newer group that debuted last summer. Although they don't have many songs yet, all of their songs have topped the charts. Honestly, if I go to Lolla this year, they will be the reason why. Their songs lean more toward the female audience but anyone can get their catchy lyrics and dance moves stuck in their head.
The Rose
I have heard songs from The Rose here and there before finding out they are coming to Lolla, but I never dived into them as a group. What's a little bit different about The Rose is that they are set up more like a band. The members play instruments during their performance as opposed to a big majority of groups that have a bigger focus on dancing. They're definitely worth checking out if you're into more indie/rock.
